Bernard Parmegiani - L'Œuvre Musicale En 12 CD

>> Wednesday, December 31, 2008

The Wire magazine recently described this amazing package as "A bargain price treasure chest....containing worlds of inexhaustible spaciousness and strangeness" and, indeed, listening through just some of the 12 cd's included you find yourself drawn into a multi-faceted world of strange sound sources and audio manipulations designed to play tricks on your senses to an extent that has left this reviewer almost paralysed with wonderment. Parmegiani started out working for the French equivalent of the BBC and soon found himself mentored by the founding father of Musique Concrète, Pierre Schaeffer. Making use of technological advances that gave the world magnetic tape and microphones, Schaeffer pioneered a method of taking everyday sounds and transforming them into unrecognisable, detached pieces of music with no identifiable sound source, a style that became known as Acousmatic music. Parmegiani was hugely influenced by Schaeffer's pioneering work and Groupe de Recherche Musicale (GRM), the French Radio institution that is often described as the French equivalent of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The work Parmegiani would go on to create would make use of these Acousmatic techniques in creating a body of work which is not only one of the most significant of the 20th century, but also hugely influential on a whole host of musical pioneers that would follow in his wake, with Christian Fennesz, Aphex Twin and Jim O'Rourke being notable disciples. These 12 cd's cover the majority of Parmegiani's musique concrète legacy and include pieces recorded between 1964 and 2007. You can barely believe the immersive and often woozy effect of these recordings, ranging from eerie cut-out tape loops through to popular music plunderphonics and proto-distilled-dub that's impossible to absorb in one sitting. Having so far only made it through half of this gargantuan collection (with the very handy aid of the 92 page book included in the package) - I can safely say that L'Œuvre Musicale is not only one of the most impressive and important collections of music I've heard this year, but also one of the most culturally significant and rewarding.

Borbetomagus - Seven Reasons for Tears

>> Monday, December 29, 2008

"This is not pretty music, but it is beautiful, gorgeous even. Its density is so complete and its delightful chaos so utterly free of any notion of convention -- even those of the avant-garde -- that they exist outside musical speech at all. Here Borbetomagus may assault the listener as they always do, but they do so on such a neural wavelength that, once properly attuned, resistance is impossible. Truly this recording is an example of what Ornette Coleman calls "ugly beauty."

Independent Dark Electronics - Interface Vol. 1

It has been a while since we posted any compilations. Anyway, got this in the email a few weeks back. This compilation was released by the label called Independent Dark Electronics. Just like the title says it's mostly dark electronics. There's something for everyone. Some songs are noisy and dark while some are constructed music and glitch electronics. It's certainly worth checking out and especially if you are hunting for new bands.

The labels site hosts this compilation so I did not make any mirrors for it since the speed is very reasonable and the bitrate is at it's highest form.

Interland

Interlard create a loud unpleasant repetitive cacophony that very few people would admit to enjoying, and fewer still really do.

Interlard’s main influences are: street noise, garden machinery, detuned radios and playing multiple sounds simultaneously.

They unify these by saturating them in layers of distorted squall, hypnotic/annoying badly synched, voodooesque drum beats and then more layers of distorted squall. Indecipherable, barely human, voices are trampled, scraped up and then buried by a dense barrage of low-end filth, and then this is repeated end on end like some kind of autistic ritual until it no longer resembles what it hardly resembled in the first place.

Infamously reclusive, Interlard exist, primarily, ensconced in a damp, windowless, subterranean room in a industrial suburb of Birmingham UK. They seldom play live only having been coaxed out into a public setting once, for the very same reasons that they remain a 2-piece band: Partly due to sociopathic tendencies, partly from an apathy borne of isolation and an inability to network.

Variously described as “Very dirt sizzle” and “Boring shit noise” and “Lo-fi noise on a stick. Endless fun. Turn it up or take something.”

Would suit fans of: Shit and Shine, Sightings, The Goslings, To Live and Shave in LA, Mouthus, Burmese, Drunks With Guns...

Solarkult - Postapokalypsis 2.0 : Reworked

So we have a fine opportunity of promoting Solarkults very first album. He released it on December 3. this year which means I'm a little behind the schedule but at least I did not fail any exams. xD

Solarkult is an dark/industrial project from Belgium and the first release is promising. Sure there are some mishaps here and there but I'm sure there will be plenty of more releases in the future. The tracks vary. Some can be very noisy and hectic while some are rather calm. The constant in most is the thick layer of guitars in the background which gives it a nice feeling with electronic sounds mixed in it.

Tracklist:

Merzbow - Anicca

Eve of Christmas special!!The first track on Merzbow's latest opus was recorded at Tin Pan Alley studios, London, on 20th April 2008 - the day after his momentous performance at ULU. Akita created an astounding and very unique 20-minute track, playing freestyle drums over his trademark noise. The final 2 tracks were created at Munemi House in Tokyo. Another fine example of why Merzbow is the undisputed King of Japanese Noise! 58 minutes in total.

KK Null - Galactic Tornado

>> Monday, December 22, 2008

The album “Galactic Tornado” by Mr. Kazuyuki Kishino (KK NULL) presents the deep, dense & dynamic electronic music. It's unconditional, intuitive and highly emotional excellent audio-work. Combining synthetic sounds from various synthesizers and electronic machines with acoustic audio signals, the composer explores (from his own point of view) some artistic values of “psychedelic electronic sound” that were widly presented on space/electronic/kraut albums from 70s.

Incapacitants - Pariah Tapes

>> Sunday, December 21, 2008

"Pariah Tapes is a MUST have collection of the oldest Incapacitants tapes released on Mikawa's own Pariah Tapes label. The first two tapes ("Eternal Paralysis" C-90 & "Peony Crackers" C-60) have never been sold in public, and the three other tapes ("Pallo" 3x C-46 set) were released in an edition of less than 100 copies. While most Japanese artists in early 80's were making free-improv. or sound collages, Incapacitants delivered such harsh noise walls, they are hard to match even today!"

Brobdingnagian - TortureStainedDisaster

>> Tuesday, December 16, 2008

[USA / 2008 / Rusty Axe Records / lim.501]

"Possibly their most demented effort yet, Brobdingnagian's new MCD "TortureStainedDisaster" is an insidious crawl through four loathsome tracks of the most nauseating order. Be it vile, pain-fuelled Black Metal or pensive expermentation with the sounds of the bleating masses, each song is guranteed to bring a new kind mind-tearing agony to the listener. Lose the remaining shreds of your sanity to the wretched, lunatic screaming vocals, the labyrinthine guitar work and the constant prescence of a warping, clawing shroud of appalling noise."

Nyodene D - True Appalachian Black Noise

From the artists own words:

This is an album of harsh noise and power electronics that draws on ritual dark ambient and black metal for influences. The music was made using synthesizers, effects pedals, contact microphones and whatever pieces of scrap metal I could obtain.

It's an album about the grim reality of living in an area so economically destitute and the rich tradition of occultism and brutality that has come to be associated with life in Appalachia and the Midwestern Rust Belt.Themes deal with insanity, religion, the supernatural and serial murder.

It's really good, definitely check this one out.

FOGNOZZLE - KEEP ON WHISPERING

This EP was born out of recordings I made of rehearsal sessions for a performance at the San Francisco Musicians Union Hall. I was drinking a lot of absinthe and immersing myself in a bath of strobe lights to try to get in the right head space. At one point I managed to electrocute myself with one of my synthesizers. I'm pretty sure that would have happened even if I hadn't been drunk on absinthe.

SEBASTIAN CRNICH -EVERYDAY LIFE ERASER

Standard Crnich's noise. Harsh but structure touched sound eraser. Crnich is a noise maker from Sarajevo (Bosnia), born 1979. Starting to explore and create homemade machines and sound toys as a child in lack of expensive fabric-made toys whitch his anti-consume parents luckily forbidded to him. This made great intelectual base for exploring other ways and imagination of childhood beside stupidity of having popular toys. Rased in deep anty-religious family and with influence of books by his mother microbiologist he started to explore his own "evolution theory" but in world or sound-bacteries. Sound of Crnich is deeply biology and radical anthropology influenced more than a simbolic-culture products called art, music or whatever. Also member of Idlness Distribution a noise/power electronics duo with Ela Vuk and run with her noise cdrs/tapes label Zvukovina.

Storm of Capricorn / Paranoia Inducta - Jama

>> Tuesday, December 9, 2008

[France / Poland / 2006 / Beast of Prey]

Excellent split release by these two new acts, Storm of Capricorn performing some nice dark industrialized ambient, a bit different from their debut & Paranoia Inducta doing some really excellent martial industrial over chants and very folky compositions.
The interesting part of the release, at least to me, is the theme; Jama is an important work of Croatian literacy and is one of the few things I enjoyed learning back in high school, a very brutal, realistic and incredibly powerful poem about violence in war; I strongly suggest reading it, even though the translation loses some of the power it’s still a timeless work that deservers everyone’s attention. AxemRangers - A Crack In The Concrete

AxemRangers is Joe, who has been experimenting with sounds in his basement in Webster, New York since the fall of 2006. Using very minimal equipment (because he is very cheap), his goal in creating sound is grounded more in emotional and personal expression rather than intellectual expression. A Crack In The Concrete is his recent EP released via the lovely Hoarse Records. The album seems to be constructed with just analogue stuff. It can get repetitive at some points but in a good way (at least to me). The radio seems to be the main source of music.

Plecto Aliquem Capite - Atrocities

Ok, I usually do not accept conventional music when I receive it for promotional purposes. This is because we don't do music; we do noise and other shit that nobody else listens. xD But oh well, I guess I can make an exception.

Most of you haven't heard any music from Sri Lanka and neither did I until now. Plecto Aliquem Capite plays noisy black metal and they are one of the few bands from there. The album starts with an ambient intro, just to draw you into the atmosphere of the album. After that starts the massive noisy screaming which I really liked. The vocalist sounds like a total lunatic ahah and because of it it's really fun to listen to this album. The production could be better, other instruments are too silent compared to the vocals. Riffs and etc. are classic slow tempo riffs (kinda like mortuus I guess) that you can find in black metal. Anyway, check this out, it's not like you hear someone from Sri Lanka every day. :D

Gorrión de Miga Records

Gorrión de Miga Records is an recently born Argentinian Netlabel. Judging by the albums which I got most of the bands have a space oriented theme. They all sound hm, pulsating I guess would be an proper use of phrase. Anyway, on with the albums!

Archive links but all albums are just one link so it should not be much trouble to upload it.

Uskuf Alagönia - Wöl Höraku
The first track is a bit weird, possibly the only track I didn't like on this album. The rest are rather good but the last track is excellent and it lasts 11 minutes which is great. It sound like an abandoned space ship somewhere in the middle of space, really gives that special atmosphere. An distorted guitar travels thorough the whole album which can sometimes get a bit out of control and sometimes even annoying but in some places it fits really great.

01. Kötsadatasäpunata (5:57)
02. Apörinix (5:57)

Kalix Necralia - El Ensueño del Ciclope Subglacial

Hm well the description I got for this album was Polar Ambient - Noise. I always find it funny when artists try to invent unnecessary genres... Anyway, composed of long and brooding tracks this project tries to drive us into this post-apocalyptic world which is now frozen and relatively noisy. :D

Tracklist:

01. Carpóstodo Ascendente (10:38)
02. La Llegada De Los Ángeles (11:48)
03. El Ensueńo del Cíclope Su (13:34)
04. Un Llanto En Los Confines (3:32)
05. Los Heraldos Del Eon De H (15:44)

eRG

And lastly we have two albums from eRG. eRG is some kind of weird electronics and noise. Perhaps a bit too random at some points but there are interesting parts on both albums. Other then that it's an nice noisy trip with sound clips from old horror alien movies.

The Goslings - Spaceheater / Perfect Interior

>> Monday, November 24, 2008

"Collecting the Goslings' first two small-run, CD-R EPs on one disc (in reverse order of release) for wider exposure via Crucial Blast, Spaceheater/Perfect Interior shows that the husband/wife team of Max and Leslie Soren can make shadowy, aggressive feedback noise with the best of them, in their own beautifully crumbly way. Roots in everything from the Dead C to Skullflower are obvious enough, while they're easily peers of many similarly inclined acts around the world -- white noise rises, falls and stops on a dime while percussion via gongs and scraps of singing weave in and out of hearing, and that's just Spaceheater's opening song "In May."

1 In May (12:59)
2 Statuette (4:56)
3 Lillian (4:11)
4 Summer For Spring (4:31)
5 Landing (5:37)
6 Bloom Again (1:46)

8 Sthenno (2:59)
9 Herons (2:07)

Prurient - The Black Post Society

[USA / 2008 / Cold Spring Records]

"The Black Post Society" embraces and accepts the depression of not having anything left to hunt. The mask without a face to hold. The depression of the hunter after the deer is killed. It is better to be hungry than to have eaten. As fantasy shatters under the whip of reality, erotic malaise settles in the nest of the mind inverting this dormant fuel to rekindle the endless cycle of sexual chaos.

Hijokaidan - Zouroku No Kibyou

>> Friday, November 21, 2008

Wow haven't seen such an ugly cover for some time now. Anyway, since the last Hijokaidan post seems to be rather popular I thought I should share this one as well. First of all this album is nothing like Sound Of The Sea. This one is more hm, instrumental? I guess you could call it like that, there's lots of instrument noise kinda like C.C.C.C. but doesn't have that flowing sound. Also, this was published two times once in 1981 and once in 2006. The 2006 release has extra two songs but I believe this is the 1981 since those two songs are missing.

Tracklist:

A1 Mantohihi (Osaka) (1:21)
A2 Takutaka (Kyoto) (6:06)
A3 Sozo Dojo (Osaka) (4:49)
A4 Shinjuku Loft (Tokyo) (8:39)
B1 Room #315, Keio University Hiyoshi Schoolhouse (Kanagawa) (7:47)
B2 Room #24, Doshisha University Shisei-kan (Kyoto) (16:18)

Satellite Clouds - Ascension of the golden torus

>> Thursday, November 20, 2008

Cute little rarity I got through email. It sounds something like Astro but a bit more energetic and less minimal. Released this year, currently their only release and it's limited to 40 copies. A taste of Swedish noise. :)

Tracklist:

Side A Remnants Of Horizons / Abdomen Of Pleiades (22:16)
Side B The Scintillating Sunshine / Matter Turns To Shit (20:16)

It can also be bought here.

Thanks to Daniel for giving me the link for this!

ERG & MSBR & Das Synthetische Mischgewebe - Geosynclines

Material exchanged and remixed by ERG and MSBR. Final edits and composition by Das Synthetische Mischgewebe. I expected it to be a lot harsher since MSBR is in this all but it's actually quite calm and atmospheric. Anyway, not to bother you with my English any longer...

02. Stratum: 2 (9:27)
03. Stratum: 3 (7:38)

Machinesaw & Death Worship - Split

Another release my friends from Machinesaw sent me. Death Worship is an rather minimalist ambient music and Machinesaw does the same on their side of the split although Machinesaws side is more aggressive like and Death Worship is more calmer in sound. Hypnotizing indeed. :O

Tracklist:

01. Death Worship - Darkest Hour (8:16)
02. Death Worship - They Serve To Breed (10:41)
03. Machinesaw - Acolyte Gathering (4:58)
04. Machinesaw - Iron Nails (5:23)

Kosak - Sample Concerto No.1

An really fun record I received. From the beginning to the end this cd is an organized loop chaos swarming from all sides like a zerg rush. :D Constantly changing pace and sound something I really enjoy in noise music. Also windows error noise ftw. Recommended.

1. Sample Concerto, No 1. VI. A Bit Of Glitchcore (1:32)
2. Sample Concerto, No 1. VII. And It Goes On... (3:18)
3. Sample Concerto, No 1. V. BreaXXXcore (4:47)

Hijokaidan - Sound of the Sea

Well all heard of Hijokaidan right? Well if you have not then you should. :P

Neat little 7'' in 1997. The title explains it all, it sounds like the sea. An rather violent sea that is.
